Co-leader James O’Donnell & I have been making music with John “Tbone” Paxton for over 35 years. For my money, John is one of the best interpreters of the Ellington trombone style in Detroit today, but on this recording we feature him primarily as a vocalist. His dad was a fine pianist & music educator & Tbone grew up hearing swing music & the Great American Song Book around the house. On this collection you’ll hear Harold Arlen, Danny Barker, Percy Mayfield & of course Ellington & Strayhorn. Some are charts by our musical director Joshua James & some are by frequent contributor Mike Sailors & there are head arrangements put together by the band members & guests like Ralph Tope. This is a fine example of what we do every night on stage with the Planet D Nonet.
